Having a second pair of hands is helpful for aligning the panels so recruit a friend!
Tools:
Microfiber cloth/water/isopropyl alcohol for cleaning wall, 4-foot level, pencil, wallpaper squeegee or brush, long straight edge and a sharp cutting tool such as a box cutter and razor blades, a flat horizontal surface for testing match. Have a supply of new blades at the ready as you'll likely need to change out the blade fairly often. Ladder as needed.
Surface Preparation
Ensure surfaces are clean, smooth, dry, free of mold/mildew, and structurally intact. Walls should not exceed 4% residual moisture content.
Recommended for smooth, flat, primed and painted surfaces. For recently primed and painted walls allow at least 30 days to cure before wallpaper installation.
For heavily textured walls (not recommended), you will need to sand down the texture. This is best handled by a professional.
If your walls are ready, you can simply wipe them down using a microfiber rag and a mixture of 70% water and 30% isopropyl alcohol. Allow to dry.
Pro Tip
Practice exercise: Lay any two panels on a flat surface with the design facing up and the adhesive backing liner still on. Try to match the design by overlapping the second panel over the first panel about 1/2 inch. Look very carefully at the design to see where they match up. This way you can envision before accomplishing. You can use painters tape to mark your design match - that way you will have it as a reference when applying wallpaper to the wall.
Wallpaper Installation
Plan and decide which side of the wall you will start hanging the wallpaper - it doesn't matter left to right or right to left. Use a level and draw a vertical plumb line 24 inches from the corner all the way up and down the wall. This will be your visual guide as you set the first panel to make sure it is aligned. This step is critical to ensure your first panel is straight.
Place the first panel on a flat surface, design face down. Pull the liner down about 6 inches and cut those 6 inches off. Start applying wallpaper from the top corner of the wall. Panels should be applied vertically, NOT horizontally. Start by placing the first panel approximately 2 inches above the ceiling level and make sure you still have at least 2 inches extra extending at the bottom of the wall. At this stage do not firmly press the wallpaper yet but gently use your finger tips to press it in place up at the top - use the guide line you drew with the level and align the edge of the wallpaper to this line all the way down as best you can.
Gently smooth out the wallpaper and any air bubbles from the center of the panel to the edges using a wallpaper squeegee or a wallpaper brush as you work from the top to the bottom, peeling the liner down as you go a little at a time. Keep an eye on your plumb line as you work with your first panel and keep the panel aligned. Do not pull harshly on the wallpaper - work with it gently as you move down the wall. Do not stretch the paper unnecessarily. If the panel is not aligning correctly, gently peel up a portion and reapply. Unpeel six more inches of backing, smooth out from the center to the edges and repeat until you reach the baseboard or the bottom of the wall. You don't need to cut off the backing every time you peel some down.
Using a straight edge and a very sharp blade, trim the top and bottom of the wallpaper, holding the straight edge firmly in place. Be careful!
Repeat with each new panel remembering to overlap about 1/2 inch to match up the design to the previously installed panel. Trim each panel top and bottom before moving to the next. Work your way across the wall until complete.
